New York four-piece Coheed And Cambria have gone from strength to strength. From their early days on Equal Vision Records – to their current international domination and astounding fourth full-length album, the prog-rock superstars have the making of legends within them.

First appearing on the rock radar in 2002, the group – fronted by comic book addict vocalist/guitarist Claudio Sanchez, and joined by Michael Todd on bass, Travis Stever on guitar and Josh Eppard on drums (since replaced by ex-Dillinger sticksman Chris Pennie)- quickly solidified their place as inspiring and imaginative musicians in the midst of a climate of cookie-cutter emo. Stating a starter mission to create a series of five albums – each forming a part of an imaginary story called The Amory Wars - the band set the plot rolling with story two, album one, The Second Stage Turbine Blade, in February of that year. Fans across the globe were quickly drawn to the curious and unusual stories that littered the full-length, as well as the immediately identifiable music that enveloped them. With high-pitched vocals, swathes of layered riffs and lush instrumentals, Coheed’s tunes harked back to 70s era Rush as well as referencing the melodic heaviness of emerging acts of the time. By February 2004, the band had already released their follow up, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, and had picked up their first Kerrang! cover. Now over three years on, the group have continued their epic imaginative saga with Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness, and this year’s No World for Tomorrow. With one record left in this epic journey (and a series of graphic novels also available that follow the stories), all eyes are turned to this innovative band, as we wait with baited breath to see the series through to its exciting conclusion – and await the other dizzy heights that lie ahead.

    • Dan Torelli

Chicago four-piece Madina Lake are the fastest rising stars of the worldwide pop punk scene. Formed only two years ago, the band was kick started by twins Nathan and Matthew Leone’s determination to make music their life. Following their winning appearance on US TV show Fear Factor, the boys snatched the cash to fund a demo (with guitarist Mateo Camargo and drummer Dan Torelli) and subsequently hooked up with international big hitters Roadrunner Records. In 2006, the group released their The Disappearance Of Adalia EP, and followed it up with this year’s From Them, Through Us, To You full length. Both the boys’ collections rest around the intriguing concept of an imaginary, fictional town in America. Through this story, the band can express their own ideas and issues about love, life and politics.

Lengthy and passionate tours around the UK have now sealed the fate of these boisterous rockers as firm favourites on our shores. Their appearance at the Give It A Name festival in April was a great success, and they followed it up with their own Kerrang! cover in August, and secured the Best International Newcomer gong at this year’s Kerrang! Awards. To finish off a storming year, the lads returned to our island in October for a headline excursion, polishing things off at the massive Forum venue in Kentish Town, London. 2008 looks set to be their year.

    • Charlie Simpson
    • Alex Westaway
    • Dam Haigh
    • Omar Abidi

London-based rock stars Fightstar have been hearty battlers since they first arrived on UK music scene nearly four years ago. Thwarted by false preconceptions – given their frontman Charlie Simpson’s turn in a chart topping pop act – the group (completed by Alex Westaway on guitars, Dan Haigh on bass and Omar Abidi on drums) gallantly fought on – proving their worth and might with damn fine musicianship and killer tunes.

Their debut release – 2005’s They Liked You Better When You Were Dead – introduced the world to the group’s moody metal and raspy vocal lines – and the singles Paint Your Target and Grand Unification Part 1 gave all a sneaky taster of what was to come. In 2006 – the group ploughed forward with the Grand Unification full-length and took their music on the road with such established acts as Funeral For A Friend and Biffy Clyro. Gradually, and steadily, the masses turned – and Fightstar began cementing themselves as one of the most exciting new rock acts in the country. Earlier this year, Simpson and co took it all up a notch, when they put out One Day Son, This Will All Be Yours – a quick follow-up to their previous full-length – but one that towered tall with mature craftsmanship and exquisite execution. Knocking the socks off all attendees at this year’s Give It A Name festival, as well as the Kerrang! Day Of Rock in August – the boys are now firm favourites – and we’re all chuffed to have them aboard the good ship K!, as we sail into the seas of excitement in early 2008.
